How to collect ESOS data in readiness for Stage 3

ESOS is a mandatory scheme requiring large organisations in the UK to measure and report their energy consumption. And it’s hoped that by doing so, companies will become more energy conscious.

What you need to do — and by when.

To comply with ESOS, large businesses across the UK are asked to supply data on the energy efficiency of their buildings, processes, and transportation. And the deadline for submitting ESOS Phase 3 data is 5th December 2023.

This deadline might look a long way off but planning now can save businesses time and money.

Whether your business qualifies or not, collecting data up to 31st December 2022 means that the data is already there if you have to submit it. And if you don’t qualify, then you’ll have all the information you need to start implementing greener practices.

It’s a win-win.

UK organisations with any of the below criteria are obligated to comply with the submission of ESOS Phase 3:

1. Employs 250 or more people
2. Annual turnover of over £44m
3. Annual balance sheet of over £38m
4. It’s an overseas company with a UK registered establishment that has 250 or more UK employees

There are guidelines for those non-qualifiers too. And these are organisations defined as a public body (as per the gov.UK website) in:

1. Regulation 3 of the Public Contracts Regulations (PCR) 2006 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland for the first compliance period, replaced by Regulation 2(1) of the PCR 2015 for the second and subsequent compliance periods
2. Regulation 3 of the Public Contracts (Scotland) Regulations 2012 in Scotland for the first compliance period, replaced by Regulation 2(1) of the Public Contracts (Scotland) Regulations 2015 for the second and subsequent compliance periods
3. If your organisation is subject to an insolvency procedure

How do you collect ESOS Phase 3 data?

We’d advise you to appoint an ESOS Lead Assessor who will guide you through:

• Regulations
• Qualification criteria
• Timescales

As well as running through the data collection process.

If you already have a utility and transport data collection process in place across your business, it makes sense for that to be your first port of call. But an ESOS Lead Assessor is vital as they’ll be able to advise you if you’ve missed anything or any additional data is needed.
