NABERS UK – a new energy rating scheme helping building owners target, measure and communicate energy performance

NABERS UK, a new energy scheme for rating UK offices’ operational energy efficiency, was launched in November 2020. Although still relatively new, it’s a scheme that will help building owners reduce carbon emissions and make their properties energy efficient.

How NABERS help building owners

A NABERS UK energy rating is based on a 1-6 star system that measures and verifies the energy use in existing premises. This allows the owners to target, measure, and communicate their buildings’ energy performance accurately.

As you can see from the chart above, the rating ranges from Poor (1) to Market Leading (6). And it also shows whether the building is on course to meet future net-zero carbon regulations, vital if the UK is to reduce carbon emissions by 57% based on 1990 levels by 2030, and 80% by 2050 (Climate Change Act 2008).

Who is behind NABERS UK?

NABERS UK is an adaptation of the successful Australian NABERS rating programme and is being led in the UK by the Better Buildings Partnership. And is backed by major industry bodies, including the British Property Federation and the  British Council for Offices.

Meanwhile, BRE Group has been confirmed as the administrator responsible for building certification and assessor training.

Upon the launch, Sarah Ratcliffe, CEO of Better Buildings Partnership, said:

“The launch of NABERS UK marks a significant milestone for this project. But more importantly, a huge leap forward for the industry in measuring and verifying UK offices’ actual energy performance. This has been a truly collaborative effort from across the industry over many years. I am absolutely delighted that we now have a scheme in the UK that will transform the market for better, more energy-efficient offices.”

How Inteb can help

With NABERS UK still being relatively new, it’s understandable for business and building owners to feel confused about another scheme aimed at reducing carbon emissions.

But Inteb can help untangle that confusion.
